Why CGI is a real, sellable stock category

Every claim below links to a source a reader can check themselves — a live platform search run today, or a contributor help page fetched and read directly this session. Where something couldn't be verified, that's stated plainly instead of guessed at, per this project's own no-fabrication rule.

01Demand is real, and it already includes CGI
Live iStock searches run today: “operating room” returns 54,000+ results, with “empty operating room” and “operating room no people” as live suggested search terms and “Empty operating room with medical equipment, 3d rendering” ranking on page one — twice. “bank vault” (24,300+) and “luxury villa interior” (27,800+) were re-checked live too, both landing on the exact counts this project's own earlier research pass recorded (datacenter_build/docs/MICROSTOCK_100_PLAN.md, not re-verified line-by-line this session). That earlier pass also found a pure-CGI listing — “Modern luxury home interior. This is entirely 3D generated image” — ranking #2 for “luxury villa interior,” and a looping CGI corridor video, “Hospital corridor with few lights on. 3d rendering. Seamless looping,” already live on the same platform.
023D renders are accepted; AI-generated images are not — two different rules
Getty/iStock's own contributor page (retouching rules, updated May 2025) names 3D rendering as one of three kinds of real “traditionally created media” — alongside camera work and illustration — distinct from generative AI: it permits retouching only “traditionally created media (e.g., camera shot, illustrated, non-AI 3D rendered)”, and states plainly elsewhere on the same page, “We don't accept content created by generative AI” (Creative Content Retouching & Modification Requirements). Shutterstock draws the identical line — “Shutterstock does not accept AI-generated content from our contributors” (Content Policy Updates: AI-generated Content, Jul 2025) — while treating real 3D renderings as their own accepted category, unchanged in substance since 2016: labelled “3D illustration” or “3D rendering” in the title and keywords, filed under Illustration (3D Content Policy Change), and, since an April 2023 update, no longer requiring a software/license property release for 3D-rendered interior spaces specifically (Content Publishing Standards and Policy Updates). Adobe is the least explicit of the three: its Generative AI FAQ (updated Jun 2026) defines generative AI narrowly — “tools that create high-fidelity content from text prompts or uploaded images using machine learning algorithms” (Generative AI FAQ) — a description that doesn't fit a deterministic Blender/Cycles script with no prompt and no trained model, but this session could not find an Adobe Stock page that names “3D-rendered” content as its own accepted category the way Getty's page does; its ordinary Photo page even describes accepting “photos shot with any camera” — camera-specific wording that doesn't explicitly settle it either way. Stated plainly rather than papered over: what's cited here for Adobe is its real, ordinary Photo quality bar — 4–100MP, sharp focus, well-lit, free of watermarks — the one this pipeline's stills would actually be submitted against (Photo submission requirements), not a confirmed 3D-content classification.
03This pipeline's own real advantages line up with those rules
No imported assets, ever — every mesh, material and light is built by a script, so there's no downloaded-texture or borrowed-model copyright risk to clear (see “A backlot, not a stock library” above). No real location and no real person means no property release and no model release — paperwork every platform above still requires of ordinary photography. And a fixed seed makes every build deterministic and idempotent: the same exact, perfect-repeat consistency none of these platforms' own review teams can get from a photo shoot.

Not attempted here: claiming this content ranks anywhere it hasn't been submitted yet. Nothing on this page has been uploaded to Adobe Stock, Shutterstock or iStock — the citations above are about real demand and real eligibility rules, not a sales track record that doesn't exist yet.

How this gets made

A backlot, not a stock library

Nothing above was modeled by hand or pulled off a stock shelf, and nothing was prompted out of an image model. Each room is one Python script that builds the geometry, wires the shaders and places the lights from scratch, then hands the scene to Cycles on a real GPU.

01Build procedurally
Every mesh, material and light comes out of the script — a fixed seed makes each build deterministic and idempotent, so running it twice gives back the same scene.
02Direct on location
Lens, aperture, height, angle and (for video) a camera move are chosen per shot, the same way they would be on a physical set — this step happens locally, next to the render GPU.
03Render and publish
Final-quality Cycles renders come off this project's own hardware. What clears review gets published here as a still or a clip — this page is the public catalog of that output, not a control surface for it.

No stock photography, no AI image generation, no pre-rendered loop. What you see is what Cycles produced on this project's own GPU.
Doors far from camera are shader holes
Only the racks nearest a given shot are fully modeled; the rest use an alpha pattern at the same pitch — indistinguishable past a few metres, honest about it here.
14 rack variants, not 336 unique models
Fill level and server mix are baked into 14 variants placed per slot; yaw jitter and LED seeds are genuinely per-rack, so no two racks blink identically.
The render farm is real infrastructure, not a public control panel
A Flamenco render manager and a worker network produced every image on this page — not a marketing diagram. It runs locally next to the studio's own GPU; the gallery above shows what it's finished. The panel below shows real worker and job counts as the farm itself reports them — not a live camera on the render, but not a mockup either.
